The DownEaster
For Owners of DownEaster Yachts

This site is a non-profit, disorganized group of owners of DownEaster yachts who are banding together here to find shelter from the harsh reality of owning and keeping up a boat—DownEasters in particular.

How-To's

How-To's show you how one owner solved a problem, made an improvement, fixed a boat system or redesigned the boat in small or big ways. They are a great source of ideas of how you might also solve the same or similar problem. For information on how to submit a How-To, click here.

Definitions:

I = Height of headstay termination above the sheer line.
J
= Distance between the headstay termination at the deck and the front of the mast at the sheer line.
P
= Distance between black bands on the mast, or the maximum luff length of the main.
E
= Distance between black bands on the boom, or the maximum foot length of the main.
PY & EY
are similar to P & E, but indicate mizzen dimensions.

Sail Area Calculations

(Again, these formulas will give approximate sail area calculations.)

Mainsail Area = P x E / 2.
Headsail Area = ( Luff x LP ) / 2. ( LP is the shortest distance between the clew and the luff ).
Approx. 150% Genoa Area = ( 1.5 x J x I ) / 2.
Approx. 135% Genoa Area = ( 1.35 x J x I ) / 2
.
100% Foretriangle = ( I x J ) / 2.
Approx. Spinnaker Area =  1.8 x J x I.
